Beach Party!

To end our season unit we celebrated the summer season with a beach party! Students brought beach towels and sunglasses and layed out sipping lemonade while watching a movie about the beach and animal life during the four seasons. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward tothe real summer season soon!

Dr. Seuss' Birthday!

To celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday the entire school participated in the 'Read Across America' event. The fifth graders joined us in a read-a-thon. We had a blast reading some of Dr. Seuss' best stories while wearing our silly hats in honor of The Cat in the Hat!

"Vroom, Vroom, Vroom!"

We ended our transportation unit with a tasty snack. Cars, trucks and boats made from frosted graham crackers and various candies. These forms of transportation sure were tasty! Yum!

Firetruck Visit

A firetruck came to visit this fall. We had a blast learning about all the parts on the firetruck and enjoyed the hats given to us by real firefighter volunteers!

Literacy Work Stations

Literacy work stations are one of our favorite activities during the day. Each student rotates through four different work stations during an hour block of time. Each station has expectations posted and mulitple activities to explore before the bell rings. While students work independently in their station I work with guided reading groups. This is a peaceful learning time for all students and they really enjoy this time to work on their own.

New Math Curriculum!

LPS has adopted Houghton Mifflin's Math Expressions for all K-2 classes. This curriculum uses 'math talk' to encourage critical thinking and works primarily in base 10. This has supported number sense skills and has allowed students to learn addition and subtraction sooner and with more success. I am very impressed with this new curriculum and have really enjoyed seeing students explore math concepts!

First Day of School!

We had a terrific first day of school! We learned how to sit criss-cross applesauce and raise our hands. How to use the bathrooms appropriately and walk down the halls quietly with our 'hips and lips'. We talked about math and numbers. Our tree needed some summer leaves so we painted green leaves. We read 'The Kissing Hand', learned a new poem and made hand-print pictures for our parents. Participated in an all school assembly and learned about the six pillars of character. Ate lunch in the cafeteria and played on the playground. Went to art class and learned how to use our toolboxes. And much, much more! It was a busy day but we learned lots and had a wonderful time getting to know one another. Thank you to all for making our first day spectacular!
